Applesauce Cake

It all started with an episode of Max & Ruby.  Ruby and her friend Louise were doing this little sing-song game that goes like this:

Brown sugar, applesauce, spices, flour- put them in the oven for half an hour.

Bake, bubble, bubble bake, apple pie is fun to make….APPLE.

So I think, hmmm…wonder if you can make something just with those ingredients.  SO I go to my trusty friend Google.  And I find a recipe.  It has oil too, but all the ingredients.  So I made it.  YUM!! So yesterday, I remember that I could use a can of Diet Coke instead of the oil.  Thank you Weight Watchers.  So here are some photos of my Applesauce Cake with Diet Coke.

WRONG.  Ok, so, use the oil people. USE THE OIL.
here is the real recipe.  Truly when made like this, YUMMY!!!

Applesauce Cake

Preheat oven to 350

2 cups applesauce
1 3/4 cups packed brown sugar
1 cup oil

3 1/2 cups flour
3/4 tsp salt
2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp ground cloves
2 tsp cinnamon

Add the applesauce mixture to the sifted mix.

Stir in:
1 cup nuts (I use walnuts)
1 cup raisins

Pour the batter into the cake pans.
Bake 35-40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
While it is baking, lick the spoons and give your husband the bowl. Mmmm.
After the cakes are cool enough to remove, cool them on cooling racks, otherwise they’ll get soggy, which is gross.

  1. It does look good and I was also going to say that with the applesauce, you could even cut back on the oil to maybe 1/4 or 1/3 of a cup–just add a little more applesauce. I will try it! (I cannot believe you put diet coke into a cake. Man.)

  2. My daughter is constantly singing that Max & Ruby song!
Your recipe looks good, but I may try only applesauce – a coworker makes cakes by substituting the oil for applesauce.

  3. My 2 year old son Graham laughs out loud at that episode, and loves to shout out “Ap-ple” like Max does when my wife starts to sing the song.
They will be trying this recipe soon, Thanks!
